A day in the life of HITCHED! Bridal owner Dana Trang via Instagrams

Posted by soutv on October 27, 2012

How do you lead a life like that of HITCHED! Bridal boutique owner Dana Trang? How busy can it get? Does she still have time to even buy her favorite coffee? Does she still have time to drop by a local flower shop and choose her blooms for the day? Fortunately for all HITCHED! Bridal boutique customers and avid readers of Dana Trang’s Lifestyle Asia blog, she shared a few Instagram photos that depict her style-filled days.

For Dana Trang, a lawyer and now a busy wedding boutique owner, life should not be all work and no play. She makes it a point to drop by her local neighborhood flower shop and buy her preferred blooms for the day. She also makes it a point to walk her furbabies Buffy and Penny around her neighborhood. During her travels, she also sees to it that she does the things that she likes – such as collecting bits and pieces for her growing accessories collection.

But of course, matters concerning brides, wedding gowns and wedding gown designers will never be far away from Dana Trang’s mind. Her heart skips a beat whenever she sees ads just like this Rivini ad on a magazine.

She also keeps the people she met and worked with during her own wedding just like E. Law.

Truly, Dana Trang’s life may be busy and hectic but she does know how to stop and smell the roses, just like any other excited bride-to-be.

Head on down to Dana’s blog for the rest of her Instagram photos and to know her more.

Getting Real Pink About Breast

Posted by soutv on October 25, 2012

We at Paul Gerrard Salon is getting all pink this month. No, not with pink champagne or pink dresses, though that would be dainty! We’re getting excited about pink for a good cause this month. October is the International Breast Cancer Awareness month, and there is no reminder more timely than the 8th annual Pink Walk for Breast Health which will be held on October 28 at the Peak.
Hosted by The HK Breast Cancer Foundation, the walkathon aims to raise funds to reduce the threat of breast cancer. The folks at Paul Gerrard Salon say yes to greater public support and donations towards breast health education, patient support services, and local breast cancer research and advocacy. There is never a better time to dress in pink.

Donna Foreman, Paul Gerrard Salon director or finance, has gone from blonde to super pink to raise funds for the Pink Revolution. Sponsorship is pouring in thanks largely to family and friends!
Discover more how you can be a part of this here.
In the spirit of all things pink, you can increase your fabulousness on the big day with these PINK line products from Jane Iredale lip gloss, available on Paul Gerrard’s online store.

The fabulous Roses & Lollipops ($280) contains PureMoist lipstick in Roses and PureGloss in Lollilops. This set also doubles as a chic keychain locket featuring a pink Swarovski Crystal. We think these lipglosses are great when used on its own; but it’s definitely to-die-for when applied together!

If you are looking for something louder, get glammed up with Pure Gloss Sugar Plum or Pink Candy ($240) for a soothing, sexier finish! We love how bold the colours are, just like the cause you will be supporting. With such a protective finish, you’ll feel beautiful and carefree all day long.
There’s never a better time to PINK up.

Addressing Common Misconceptions About HIV

Posted by soutv on October 25, 2012

To effective combat HIV discrimination, we, as humans, must start understanding what HIV is and what it is not. Humans naturally fear the unknown. Accurate knowledge about the virus will help tackle the misconceptions of HIV head on, along with the discrimination.

Contrary to popular belief, HIV is not spread by normal everyday interactions with people living with the virus. These interactions include crying, coughing, and sneezing. So fear not about giving a POZ (a person who has received a positive test for the HIV virus, also known as People Living with HIV or PLHIV) a handshake or a hug; they need it just as much as anyone else!

It is also not possible to contract HIV from water contact at public pools or baths. Same goes for contact from food or beverages. Sharing utensils, household appliances, and furniture with people living with HIV is perfectly safe.

Unless blood is present, you cannot be infected by the virus through contact with bodily fluids such as vomit, sweat, stool, or nasal secretions. Though a small concentration of HIV may be present in tears, urine, and saliva, one cannot get HIV through contact with these fluid. The same goes for mosquitoes and insect bites.

Despite the recent medical breakthroughs and prescription drugs available to treat AIDS, it still does not mean that HIV is now under control. Drug-resistant strains of HIV are rife in many communities around the world, and there is yet to be a wonder drug that can kill all known strains of the virus.

Some HIV positive people believe they can’t spread the virus because they are receiving medical treatment. This is untrue. With or without medical care, people living with HIV must take utmost care and safety measures to ensure they do not pass on the virus to those around them.

HIV affects everyone young and old, gay and straight, men and women. Just because you are heterosexual, or do not use IV drugs, does not mean you can’t contract the HIV virus. No one is immune. If you are sexually active, make sure you incorporate tests for HIV and other sexually transmitted disease as part of your regular check-ups.

By advocating truths and preventing misinformation, we can go a long way towards a world that is more tolerant and knowledgeable about AIDS.

Three Sure-Fire Ways To Attract and Engage Your Audience

Posted by soutv on October 24, 2012

For most small businesses with a website, the holy grail for their online success is web traffic. However, page views and unique visitors, although important metrics to measure, are just one part of the overall story to online success.

Just how engaged is your web traffic to your content, brand, and site?

Building a site which has a strong sticky factor – that is, one that will make your audience return again and again – doesn’t necessarily need technical skills. What you need is time and effort, and plenty of both.

Connect with a blog. Probably one of the best decisions you can make for your website is to maintain a blog to engage with your audience. Build a blog packed with useful content, such as how-tos, product demos, and interviews. Present your blog in a conversational tone (read: not pre-approved sound bites) and watch your audience interaction increase.

Engineer a community on your site. Simply throwing a message board or enabling a commenting function on your website is not enough to make your site a success. To be truly successful, you need to give your audience a voice by listening for their concerns, responding to their comments, and sourcing feedback at every touch point. Gamification and reward programmes are also great tools for audience engagement.

Make everything shareable. With stellar content and an active community, you now have the power of social networking at your fingertips. Make everything on your site – articles, photos, videos, PDFs, etc – easily accessible to anyone, by anyone. There are many ways to do this, but installing plug-ins to allow your audience to share on Facebook and Twitter is a good first step to build brand awareness and increase word-of-mouth.

What are your favorite ways to get your audience even more engaged on your website?

The link between HIV transmission and the war on drugs

Posted by soutv on October 24, 2012

In New York, one in seven persons who use drugs is living with HIV. 30% to 40% of these these users still share needles, leading to an increased exposure to HIV. In sub-Saharan Africa, one-third of all new HIV infections happen to people using injection-drug.

The link here? Repressive law enforcement activities by United States, Eastern Europe and Central Asia, among others. Nations with the most aggressive drug policies report terrifying infection rates amongst people who use drugs.

In fear of recrimination, they are prevented from seeking clean needles. When infected, they are further driven away from available health services and treatments and are instead increasingly mired in unsafe practices that increase the risk of infection. Such a vicious cycle makes HIV more prevalent than it should be in even the most developed countries and in certain regions.

Instead of criminalising drug users, the focus should move towards prevention and treatment. Government should encourage people who use drugs – as well as others who are at risk – to come forward for treatment. Such measure are proven to be far economical than to reinstate policies that aim to threaten those faced with drug addiction.

Concerted effort should be made to advocate AIDS prevention message. As the sayings goes, “prevention is better than cure”, resources used to criminalise people who use drugs can be better placed towards community education and outreach programme.

In place of fear, the voice of authority should be sown with empathy, support and positivity. Everyone has a right to health, even people who use drugs. The ongoing war on drugs deters us further to truly put an end to AIDS and therefore shall be put to an end, too.

The Human Brain and Writing For Social Media

Posted by soutv on October 19, 2012

Writing for social media is a tricky business. So much effort is put into turning an exciting phrase or sexing up a boring topic. To be really effective at social media writing, it is important to look deeper than the words you choose. Humans take in and process information in predictable ways. Understanding the psychology of memory, recognition, and retention are great tools to significantly increase the effectiveness of your message writing. You can still be fun and sexy, but now you can be smart too. Some simple rules to keep in mind when writing:

  • seven words
  • first and last are the most remembered words
  • familiar or emotionally loaded words work best

Seven words:

Human beings have a short-term working memory. At most, it can hold seven words. For me it is much less, but I am over 50 years old, ha ha. Keeping this in mind, the next time you are tempted to write a novel on Facebook remember that the average person will only see or remember seven words at most. It is important to make those seven words count. The more words you use, the less likely any of them will register or be remembered. More work = less reward.

First and Last:

When reading a sentence the first words and last words are remembered most. The end words are remembered the best. So if you have seven words to communicate the message to your fans, it is good to prioritise. The words you place at the beginning and end are the most important.

Familiar and emotional:

Put away the thesaurus! People scan messages and words that are familiar or have high emotional value register best. Keep it simple silly (KISS) for sexcess. What did you see in that last sentence????

Here is fun list of memory games I found. Play around with them and your message writing. Practice makes perfect.

Much success,

Doug
